Mercedes-Benz has partially ironed out the slump in sales in the first half of the year with sharply increased sales figures in the summer quarter. The brand with the star delivered 517,800 new cars from July to September, 21 percent more than in the same quarter of the previous year.
From January to September, sales amounted to 1.5 million vehicles, according to figures published on Tuesday. This is a decline of six percent compared to the previous year, after production losses due to a lack of chips and the corona lockdown in China had caused a minus of 16 percent in the first half of the year.
In China, Mercedes sales showed the strongest recovery with an increase of 37 percent, followed by the USA (plus 31 percent). In Europe, the Dax group sold almost a fifth more new cars.
“In a challenging business environment, characterized by ongoing semiconductor bottlenecks, we continue to see robust demand for our products,” said Head of Sales Britta Seeger. The energy crisis in Europe and the corona pandemic in Asia nevertheless weighed on consumer sentiment.

Mercedes-Benz is also making progress with the sale of what will soon be eight EQ brand electric car models, while interest in plug-in hybrids is declining. The van division increased sales by four percent to almost 100,000 units in the third quarter, with private customers in particular accessing it, while demand from corporate customers stagnated.
