Mercedes-Benz is doubling the production capacity for electric drives at the car manufacturer’s largest component plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim to one million units. The ramp-up for the drives of the fully electric vehicles of the EQ brand should begin in 2024, the carmaker announced on Tuesday, thereby confirming a report by “Wirtschaftswoche”. To this end, the company has concluded a new agreement with the works council. The brand with the star wants to convert its entire range to pure electric cars by the end of the decade, if market demand is appropriate.
In the main plant, which also houses the group headquarters, production has been gradually being switched from engines and transmissions for combustion cars to technology for electric cars since 2019. The works council and company management had debated whether to build the electric drives themselves or buy them.

The electric drive unit for the new models is being developed internally at Mercedes-Benz, the carmaker explained. Drive research and development is also located in Untertürkheim. Construction of the new assembly lines will begin next year. Employees are being retrained for this at the site, which currently has around 16,000 employees.
