Tesla is offering Chinese buyers more limited-time discounts on some EV models starting Wednesday. By the end of 2022, there will be a 6,000 yuan (about 850 euros) discount on certain models if they are still delivered in December, a company official said on Wednesday. The Chinese financial news portal “Wallstreetcn” first reported on the discount.
The move is the US automaker’s latest price adjustment in China. Tesla has already slashed prices for the Model 3 and Model Y there by up to 9 percent as the Shanghai plant is piling up cars due to slowing demand in China. Thanks to the discounts, the factory delivered 100,291 electric cars in November. That was up 40 percent from October and the highest monthly sales since it opened in late 2020.
Now also in Thailand
At the same time, Tesla started selling its cars in Thailand, and the vehicles are apparently also offered there at comparatively low prices. According to the AP news agency, Tesla is offering the Model 3 and Y in Thailand at prices competitive with its Chinese rival BYD can exist. The Tesla costs between 1.76 million and 2.5 million baht, which corresponds to a price range between 48,000 and 68,000 euros.
The price is much lower than he expected, AP quoted a Thai customer who attended Tesla’s launch presentation as saying he plans to purchase a vehicle from the Americans.
The news about renewed price discounts is apparently not well received on the stock exchange. Tesla shares were down 1.8 percent in premarket trading on Wednesday.
