The car company Mercedes begins to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine. From 2024, the most important engine plants in Germany, Romania and China are to start mass production of batteries and electric motors.
With the new production arrangement, Mercedes is now “preparing for the rapid scaling of electric drives worldwide,” said Production Director Jörg Burzer on Tuesday evening in Stuttgart. Burzer wants to invest a “single-digit billion amount” in the conversion in the coming years.
It’s high time for Mercedes. “It’s possible that we started a bit late, but we’ve caught up a lot,” said Burzer, referring to the entire German auto industry. The Stuttgart promise a quick turnaround.
