Autonomous vehicles could now drive at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour. Germany adopts the UN rules.
Until last year, autonomous vehicles were only allowed to drive up to 60 kilometers per hour when operating in autonomous mode. The top speed is now 130 km/h. This change was made by the U.N. passed and became German law at the turn of the year.
Such vehicles would need to be at least level 3 to do so, and would be allowed to drive that fast on certain roads and certain conditions. In Germany there is currently only the S class from Mercedes Benzthat actually achieves this level of automation. Germany but is also the first country in the EU to adopt the UN specification.
The USA or China, for example, have never signed these UN harmonization rules for transport and are independent of them. But the cars don’t drive that fast here either. The faster the cars drive, the faster they have to analyze sensor data and check more distance. Should one cross the state line, a GPS system would report this, so the speed would be reduced.
