(IN BRIEF) Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom, and teledriving company Vay are set to showcase a remote driving demo called teledriving at MWC 2023 in Barcelona. The demo will feature an unoccupied electric vehicle driven remotely by a trained teledriver from a teledrive center. Before and after a customer takes control of the vehicle, it is driven remotely by a professionally trained teledriver from a teledrive center. The teledriving use case is a significant use case proof point for L4S (Low Latency Low Loss Scalable), key technology for high-quality, latency-critical applications. It is expected that L4S will reduce the amount of redundant networks required for latency-critical applications. The demo aims to showcase how L4S has the potential to improve the quality and safety of remote driving.
(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 22-Feb-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Telekom (ETR: DTE), one of the world’s leading integrated telecommunications companies and the largest telecommunications provider in Europe by revenue, is proud to announce that it is partnering with Ericsson and teledriving company Vay to showcase a new teledriving demo at MWC 2023 in Barcelona. The demo, which will connect live to an electric car in Berlin, is a significant use case proof point for L4S (Low Latency Low Loss Scalable), a key technology for high-quality, latency-critical applications.
This latest milestone is the result of our long-standing innovation partnership with Ericsson and our shared commitment to advance the adoption of L4S. Our partnership with Vay, which started in October 2022, has allowed us to implement and test L4S, enabling us to demonstrate the potential of this technology to improve the quality and safety of remote driving.
The teledriving use case is a major achievement for Vay, which is the first company in Europe to drive a car without a person inside the vehicle on a public road. The company aims to launch a sustainable, affordable, door-to-door mobility service with remotely driven (teledriven) cars starting in Germany and the US.
The demonstration will show a teledriver remotely operating a vehicle in Berlin from the teledrive station in Barcelona, optimized with 5G managed latency using L4S. The demo will take place in Ericsson’s Hall 2 at Fira Gran Via during MWC 2023 Barcelona, from 27 February-2 March. We look forward to showcasing this innovative technology and demonstrating how it can be a game-changer for the future of transportation.

Vay’s teledrive-first approach prioritizes sustainability and safety, providing an alternative to traditional mobility services. The company aims to gradually introduce autonomous driving functions to its system as it becomes safe and permissible to do so. At MWC 2023, Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom, and Vay will demonstrate how L4S can improve the quality and safety of remote driving. L4S is expected to reduce the number of redundant networks needed for latency-critical applications, as it supports momentary congestion marking in capacity-limited network cells. This allows for the rapid identification and adaptation of data rates to remove congestion situations, making the system more efficient. L4S is based on an IETF standard and is currently in standardization in 3GPP as a work item for release 18.
