Volkswagen is in talks to sell its plant in Kaluga, Russia. A group spokesman said on Wednesday that various scenarios for the future of business operations were being considered Russia under consideration. “One of the options is to sell the assets of Volkswagen Group Rus, and with it the Kaluga plant, to a third party,” he said. “The talks are ongoing, a final decision has not yet been made.”
The Russian media RBK had previously reported without confirmation from the two companies that the Russian car trading group Avilon wanted to buy the plant in Kaluga. The deal is nearing completion.
Against the background of the Ukraine-War ended production in the then two factories in Russia in March 2022. The export of vehicles to Russia was also stopped for all group brands. In May, the group then withdrew from production at the Russian assembly plant in Nizhny Novgorod. There was joint production with the carmaker Gaz, whose co-owner Oleg Deripaska is on sanctions lists in connection with the war.
