German Manager Magazine: Testing the Hyundai Ioniq 5: The Invisible Power002402

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 can do more than it shows. Because its true power, as I explained to my children after the first two trips, lies in – ui, ui, ui! – invisible ones. From then on, my sons climbed into the gleaming white car with a poker face worthy of a movie.

The secret formula is E-GMP. No password conjuring up the magical Harry Potter moment for the driver; but still a technical acronym for one of the most advanced electrical architectures in the industry. Because the Electric Global Modular Platform relies on an 800-volt network instead of the usual 400-volt technology. What does that bring to this electric model? Thanks to increased voltage, the Korean competes with the almost twice as expensive Porsche Taycan when it comes to charging the battery and – in terms of range – with Tesla’s extremely popular Model 3.

The victories that you bring in as a small family are therefore silent: faster away from the charging station and less often.

The one or other additional stop in the compact car would not be so unpleasant, especially in the top equipment Uniq. In this Hyundai offers an extra equipment package for 1200 euros that should be prescribed by law to every road user: Relax. Perhaps the chairs in the front, which can be converted into reclining seats, are more of a discipline for relaxed juxtaposition than the increase in the catalog of fines.

In any case, the very generous feeling of space in the car created an almost strangely friendly atmosphere. The child seats on the back seat can be mounted so far apart that pinching, hitting and scratching become impossible. And the Bose sound system swallows insults enthusiastically. A family hero, this Hyundai!

The design-related child spacer, which proves to be a great advantage while driving, is then a disadvantage when parking. “Mom, is the car also available in narrow?” crowed from the back seat. And that after the first attempt to park the car within the usual parking space markings. A width of almost 1.90 meters is 10 centimeters more than the current Golf and makes the Ioniq 5 a real spaceship in accordance with its futuristic look. What doesn’t matter under the carport of a family home can lead to awkward maneuvers in the city center.

Why there is still a childish tip for the successor to the Hyundai: “It would need a button to hover.”
