The car industry is moving to China in caravans – despite all the geopolitical and industrial policy debates. The “Auto Shanghai” will take place there next week, for the first time since the strict lockdowns of the corona pandemic. And of course local, Western and Eastern manufacturers and suppliers want to show their best side to make a difference in the world’s largest car market. My colleague Claas Tatje flies in for us – if you meet him, best regards.
Spoiler: Shanghai will keep us busy in this newsletter – but first our topics of the week:
How Northvolt haggles over the battery factory in Heide
What moves Europe’s most powerful car lobbyist
And a chip-chip hurray for ex-Bosch CEO Harald Kröger
Top topic: Northvolt and the fight for Heide
Heide yes, or Heide no? The Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt wants to build a gigafactory in Schleswig-Holstein – and everyone is enthusiastic. Finally a European project against the Asian battery supremacy. But it wobbles. Now Northvolt boss Peter Carlsson is fighting for subsidies and electricity prices. Brussels and Berlin are involved, but in the background it is also about new investor billions for his start-up. My colleagues Margret Hucko and Michael Freitag have the insights of an industrial thriller
researched.

So many electric vehicles were made in India last year sold
– more than a million for the first time! However, the responsible manufacturers’ association also includes e-bikes and e-three-wheelers such as rickshaws. Four-wheelers accounted for just 4 percent of electric vehicles sold.
Finally back to Shanghai and the spectacle of the Auto Show. Should you ever have enough of the trade fair in the evening, here is a little Shanghai service: Das Fu Hey Hui
by chef Tony Hu, famous for its vegetarian cuisine, has just been voted the best restaurant in mainland China. And considered China’s best bar Sober Company
: While you can dine downstairs, drinks (recommend cocktails: Corpse Reviver, Sixty Forty) are served upstairs – with the crowning glory being a secret bar called Tipsy on the same building. Should you meet our colleague Claas Tatje there too: Cheers.
In any case, I wish you an eventful week.
Sincerely yours, Lukas Heiny
