The switch to electromobility is progressing more slowly than planned at the Stuttgart car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. The group is cashing in on the interim target it announced almost two years ago that half of sales should be purely electric cars and plug-in hybrids from 2025.
The company is sticking to the formulation that half of the vehicles will be electric by the middle of the decade. But: “As of today means the middle of the decade: 2026,” says Mercedes boss Ola Källenius, according to the text of the speech at the group’s annual general meeting on Wednesday. The Swede is thus postponing the milestone in his “Electric only” strategy by at least one year.
Källenius, on the other hand, leaves the overall goal of only delivering purely electric cars by 2030 as far as possible. Internally, however, many are relieved that the group always kept a back door open when announcing its plans for a drive turnaround in summer 2021. The full electricity motto therefore only applies where “market conditions allow”.
