Tesla is slated to meet Indian officials today and tomorrow, Reuters reported citing a person in the know, where local acquisition of parts, amongst other matters, will be taken up.
Tesla’s renewed interest comes against the backdrop of the US automaker’s decision to put on hold its decision to sell cars here, upon not being able to get reduced import taxes, which Elon Musk said were amongst the highest ever, Reuters reported.
The company and the government did not offer a timely response to the newswire.
The auto major wanted reduced tariffs in order to test the waters in the country, with automobiles imported from China and the US. However, the government wanted the company to manufacture locally first, before slashing import taxes on cars, which can be as high as 100 percent, Reuters reported.
Local sourcing fits in well with the Indian government’s Make in India vision, specially given that organisations are scouting for options beyond China, to expand supply chains, Reuters reported.
The meeting comes a few weeks prior to the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States in the coming month, Reuters reported. Bloomberg News was the first to give news on the meeting, the newswire stated.
