The German automaker bmw and VW ranked third and fourth overall in the three categories of market dominance, technological achievement and strategic vision, according to the Global Automaker Rating 2022 report released on Wednesday. In the ranking, the organization, headquartered in Washington, used ten specially created criteria to assess how successful the world’s 20 largest automobile manufacturers are in the transition to zero-emission vehicles.
According to the ICCT, the report is based, among other things, on a database on the sales of electric cars and their most important specifications of the markets in China, the USA, the European Union, Japan, India and the Republic of Korea in 2022. The 20 manufacturers accounted for 89 percent of sales in those six markets and 65 percent of global sales, it said.
BMW as the best European company in 3rd place
BMW ended up in third place overall with 56 out of 100 points as the best European company. Shortly thereafter, VW followed in fourth place with 53 points. The frontrunner was the electric car manufacturer with a clear lead Tesla with 83 points, followed by the Chinese automaker BYD with 73 points. Far behind its competitors, however, was the Japanese group Toyota with 30 points in 15th place, with Suzuki bringing up the rear.
With a view to the diesel scandal Volkswagen in 2015, the ICCT praised the company’s rapid progress. “Considering that it’s only been seven years since the Dieselgate scandal, it’s remarkable to see VW emerging as a serious frontrunner in the transition to 100 percent zero-emission vehicles,” said Rachel Muncrief, ICCT executive director, in a statement . Together with US environmental authorities, Verbund made a decisive contribution to the fact that the diesel affair first came to light in the United States in autumn 2015.
The number of emission-free cars must increase sharply
Despite the development in the electromobility turnaround, every manufacturer still has a lot of work to do, emphasized the ICCT. Although Tesla is ahead in terms of charging speed and range, it must offer more models in all size classes. In addition, only half of the car manufacturers in 2022 said at least every tenth car sold was emission-free.
In order to limit global warming to below two degrees in accordance with the Paris climate targets, the ICCT estimates that the sales share of zero-emission cars and vans would have to be 77 percent by 2030. Additional measures are required to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees. The international community has committed itself to this goal at the past climate conferences in order to avert the worst consequences of climate change.
