The new BMW 5 manages level 3 and you can drive hands-free at up to 130 kilometers per hour.
So far only Mercedes Benz bring such a car on the market and now follows bmw. The Bavarian manufacturer pushes its 5 Series to the next level.
From October it will be on the market, the new Level 3 BMW. The system in question is the Autobahn Assistant, for which the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has now approved. In this way, drivers can use the BMW up to 130 kilometers per hour driving without hands on the wheel. This is not yet possible at Mercedes-Benz. When Mercedes brought out its S-Class, the top speed for semi-autonomous driving was still 60 km/h.
In North America, the system is already available in the 7 series, which raises the vehicles to partial autonomy. The cost in Germany is around 60,000 euros for the car with standard equipment, plus 850 euros for the system. It is available in the Driving Assistant Professional package and the BMW Connected Drive services.
Level 3 means you can sit back while driving on suitable stretches. But you have to be able to take the steering wheel again within a few seconds. For this purpose, a camera in the BMW is directed inwards.
