Almost two weeks ago, Audi boss Markus Duesmann flew to China with board members Hildegard Wortmann and Jürgen Rittersberger. Together with Volkswagen China board member Ralf Brandstätter, the 54-year-old negotiated with the local joint venture partners. The visit was a rescue attempt in Audi and VW’s most important market. According to negotiating circles, it was about which partners will use which products in the future.
The Audi boss had big plans, and not just in China. After his return, he wanted to silence the criticism of his person by binding central tasks and more power at Audi to himself, according to company circles. The mood there was bad, and relationships with many board members were dysfunctional.
