Nothing stays the same. Mercedes-Benz is overhauling the powertrain of its electric cars from “A to Z”, announced CEO Ola Källenius. From the engine to the transmission to the power electronics, battery cell chemistry and the heat pump, the Swabians are developing everything from scratch. With this, Källenius wants to achieve a boost in efficiency and put the most economical all-electric series car in the world on the road.
The Swedish-German manager presented what that means on Sunday in the run-up to the IAA Mobility trade fair in Munich with the “Concept CLA”. The vehicle with a glass roof and XXL display is already very close to the sedan that customers will be able to buy from 2025. And Källenius promises nothing less than something like the “one-liter car” of the electric age.
