Setback for the most valuable chip company in the world: Nvidia has lost a prestigious contract with the Mercedes car company. For the next generation of the E-Class, rival Qualcomm will supply the infotainment chips. “Our Snapdragon solution is developing into the preferred platform for the digital cockpit,” said Qualcomm boss Cristiano Amon to the Handelsblatt on the new partnership on the sidelines of the IAA auto show in Munich.
For Mercedes, this should end the strong dependence on the US chip company Nvidia. The Stuttgart-based carmaker is currently using chips and software from Qualcomm’s competitor for both driver assistance systems and infotainment.
The contracts are still a topic of discussion in the automotive industry today: Mercedes has agreed on what is known as “revenue sharing” with Nvidia for the driver assistance systems. Nvidia will thus share in the sales that Mercedes achieves with the sale of driver assistance systems. This agreement has caused a lot of resentment internally, as Nvidia will share 50 percent of the proceeds.
