Race Energy, an EV battery swapping company, announced a partnership with Lohum, a sustainable energy transition materials provider to address the challenges of EV battery waste and discover potential secondary uses for batteries that have outlived their primary use.
The initiative comes in line with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines, emphasizing responsible battery management. With this alliance, over 90% of the raw materials from Race’s old batteries are anticipated to be effectively recycled or refurbished.
Earlier in June 2023, Race Energy opened a battery manufacturing facility, boasting a production plant with a 50 MWh capacity, designed to produce up to 30,000 batteries each year. The firm’s approach to sustainability is notable, with battery-enhancing techniques extending battery longevity by approximately 40%.
Lohum will use Race’s batteries for secondary uses like renewable energy storage or repurposed for smaller EVs, fostering a circular economic model.
Gautham Maheswaran, Co-Founder of Race Energy, commented on the partnership, “This collaboration with Lohum enhances the lifespan of our swappable battery modules, transitioning them into valuable secondary applications.”
Chetan Jain, Senior VP – Business at Lohum, praised Race Energy’s efforts to bolster EV battery sustainability. Lohum gained recognition in September 2023 when it employed its unique NEETM™ multi-stage hydrometallurgical recycling technology to create Pure Metallic Lithium. This innovation marked them as the first company outside of China to achieve this via recycling, setting the stage for a more sustainable approach to battery materials.
