India Yamaha recalls 300,000 125cc Ray ZR and Fascino hybrid scooters

India Yamaha Motor has announced a voluntary recall of around 300,000 units of two of its 125cc scooters manufactured between January 1, 2022 through to January 4, 2024, with immediate effect.

As per the company, the “recall is aimed at resolving an issue with the brake lever function in select units of the Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid and Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid scooter models (January 2022 onward models). The replacement part is being provided to the concerned customer free of charge.”

To verify the eligibility for the recall, owners of these 300,000 Yamaha scotoers have to log into the Service section of the India Yamaha Motor website (https://www.yamaha-motor-india.com/), navigate to the ‘SC 125 Voluntary Recall’ and enter their Chassis No. details to know the next steps. At around 300,000 units for the two scooters, this constitutes the largest recall by India Yamaha Motor as yet. Since SIAM’s Code of Voluntary Recall came into effect in July 2012, the company has recalled a total of 63,977 units. The company has previously recalled 56,082 Cygnus Ray scooters in July 2013,. 138 R1 motorcycles in March 2014 and 7,757 FZ150 bikes in December 2019. Yamaha’s total recalls in India now stand expanded to 363,977 units.

Vehicle recalls also indicate the maturing of the Indian market as also the improving quality of Indian vehicles which is also seen in growing export numbers. Importantly, vehicle recalls reflect Indian OEMs’ proactive efforts to address technical issues in their vehicles, as is the industry practice in developed countries.

From an industry perspective, this is the second largest recall by an Indian two-wheeler OEM, following the May 2021 recall for 615,666 units (comprising the Activa 5G/6G/125, CB Shine, CB 300R, H’ness CB350, X-Blade and Hornet).

From July 2012 through to  end-December 2024, a total of 53,51,935 vehicles or 5.35 million units have been recalled in India (see data table above). A total of 23 OEMs – 16 carmakers and 7 two-wheeler manufacturers – make up this list of recalls over the past 10 years comprising 39,09,465 cars and SUVs (73% of total recalls) and 14,42,470 two-wheelers (27%).
