New Delhi: Delhi Cabinet on Friday decided to extend Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy till June 30 this year or until the notification of Delhi EV policy 2, whichever comes earlier.

On Monday, TOI reported that the policy, which expired last year, was not extended leading to people not being able to avail the subsidy benefits on the electric vehicles for over past two months. The previous EV policy expired on Dec 31.

Transport minister Kailash Gahlot said, “All current incentives and subsidies remain intact, and any vehicles purchased from Jan 1 onwards will be eligible for the benefits under this extension”.

“The extension of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy underscores our dedication to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly transport ecosystem in the capital. Under the visionary leadership of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, we are committed to making Delhi a leader in electric mobility at global level,” he said after the Cabinet meeting.

Under the EV policy, two-wheelers get a subsidy of INR 5,000 per kWh of battery capacity (maximum INR 30,000). Three-wheelers get a subsidy of INR 30,000 per vehicle, irrespective of total cost and battery capacity. The subsidy for four-wheelers is not applicable anymore as it was offered only for the first 1,000 EVs that were registered under the scheme.

Under the policy, govt has disbursed financial incentives totalling over INR 179 crore across various e-vehicle segments, with INR 64 crore disbursed for two-wheelers, over INR 100 crore for three-wheelers.

The initial Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy was notified on Aug 7, 2020 for a duration of three years, later extended until Dec 31, 2023. The govt is now in the process of formulating the EV Policy 2.0.

After compressed natural gas, the transition to EV is the next vehicular transition in the national capital.

Delhi govt wanted to bring EV policy 2.0 in Oct after the expiry of current policy in Aug for which it did consultations with different stakeholders. However, it was stuck after termination of services of advisors, consultants, and fellows in the department.
