The electric car manufacturer Tesla has orders for the cheapest version of its Cybertruck in the USA stopped. The pickup was offered for $61,000 (55,900 euros), with a range of 250 miles (approx. 402 km) and a delivery date of 2025. However, the $100,000 version can be ordered immediately and delivered later this month , as the company’s website shows.
Tesla investors and fans are closely monitoring demand and supply for the Cybertruck. CEO Elon Musk (53) has put a lot of resources into developing the vehicle and plans to produce 200,000 units per year.
Deliveries of the Cybertruck began in November 2023 after years of delays and a difficult production ramp-up. The truck has an unconventional trapezoidal exterior design inspired by the movie “Blade Runner” and a stainless steel body. Musk estimated in 2019 that the truck could cost $40,000 and travel 500 miles or more on a single charge. In October last year, Musk announced that Tesla had a million reservations for the pickup.
However, many customers are apparently waiting for cheaper versions because the prices are higher and the range is shorter than originally forecast. “This shows that demand is much lower than a million pickup trucks,” Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid told Reuters.
In July, Tesla sold almost 4,800 units of the expensive version of the Cybertruck – its best month yet. This makes the Stromer the best-selling vehicle in the USA with a price of more than $100,000, as analyzed by the car dealer service provider Cox Automotive. “Tesla has sold more than 16,000 vehicles to date, but sustained high volume at this price point will be challenging,” a Cox spokesman said.
Anyone who orders the $99,990 version with two engines and a range of 318 miles (approx. 512 km) now will probably receive the vehicle this month. The $119,990 version with three motors and a range of 301 miles (484 km) will be available in October. “They’re sitting on a large inventory of two- and three-engine vehicles right now,” Abuelsamid said.
