Car sales in Europe rise by 3.3% in 2017 and exceed 15.6 million units

The registrations of cars and SUVs in the European market as a whole stood at 15.63 million units during 2017, 3.3% more compared to the 15.13 million units sold in 2016, according to data published by the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).

In the European Union, car deliveries closed last year with 15.13 million units, which translates into a progression of 3.4% compared to the data recorded the previous year.

The organization explained that this increase of 3.4% experienced in the EU in 2017 represents the fourth consecutive year of sales growth and pointed out that it is the first time since 2007 that the barrier of 15 million units has been overcome.

The majority of the five main European markets contributed to this annual commercial improvement, given that Spain (+ 7.7%), Italy (+ 7.9%), Germany (+ 2.7%) and France (+4, 7%) experienced growth, while the United Kingdom recorded a sales decrease of 5.7% in 2017.

In December, passenger and off-road deliveries in Europe reached a volume of 1.13 million units, representing a decrease of 4.8% compared to the 1.19 million units delivered in the last month of the previous year.

Volkswagen led the European market last year, with a sales volume of 1.7 million units, down 0.9%, ahead of Renault, with 1.15 million units, 4.5% more; of Ford, with 1.03 million units, 0.3% less; of Peugeot, with 925,113 units, 7% more, and Mercedes-Benz, with 893,574 units, 6.4% more.
