Mercedes-Benz receives approval for partially automated driving up to 95 km/h: From 2025, drivers of S-Class and EQs can hand over control to the Drive Pilot system on German highways.
Mercedes Benz Has for its partially automated driving system Drive pilot Developed an update and received the approval of the Federal Motor Transport Authority. The introduction is planned in Germany in early 2025. The system for the S-class And EQs is available at a price of 5,950 euros, enables partially automated driving according to Sae Level 3. Existing vehicles receive the update free of charge.
After the update, Drive Pilot can Speeds up to 95 km/h can be used on the entire German motorway network. During use, drivers can devote themselves to other activities such as film shows or work because the system completely takes over the driving task.
Security is guaranteed by redundant systems: important functions such as electronics, steering and brakes are designed twice. If the driver does not take the control back, the system independently brings the vehicle to a standstill. Over 35 sensors, including cameras, radar, ultrasound and lidar, enable precise surroundings. In combination with a digital map, the vehicle can determine its position in a centimeter accuracy.
Mercedes-Benz is aiming to reach the legally permitted top speed of 130 km/h for partially automated driving by the end of the decade. As an innovation, the company has developed turquoise lights that indicate the active status of Drive Pilot to the outside world. These “Automated Driving Marker Lights” are not yet approved in Germany, but have been in California and Nevada Approved for tests and later series production at the end of 2023.
