German Manager Magazin: Electromobility: Xiaomi promotes ex-BMW employees AN004060 for development center

The Chinese electronics group Xiaomi in its new electric car development center, among other things, relies on former BMW-Employees. The company recently hired five experienced engineers for the location, including several from BMW, as can be seen from LinkedIn entries. A number of job offers is also still open, including for car designers or aerodynamics experts. Xiaomi said on Friday that the research center was on the planning stage. The company did not give details.

Xiaomi is the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer and also produces kitchen appliances such as vacuum cleaners or kettles as well as other electronic devices. The company only entered vehicle production last year. The first model SU7 overtaken the Model 3 of Tesla on the Chinese market in December. Xiaomi President Lu Femhing announced only a few days ago to sell cars worldwide from 2027. However, he left open which markets are in sight.

Last year, Xiaomi converted 32.1 billion Yuan with its electric vehicle business and delivered more than 135,000 SU7 SEDAN models. This year the group wants to deliver 350,000 electric vehicles – 300,000 were targeted at the end of December.

Xiaomi had completed the past financial year with an unexpectedly powerful increase in profit. The adjusted net profit grew by 69 percent in the fourth quarter to 8.32 billion Yuan (around 1.05 billion euros), as the company announced on Tuesday. Analysts had expected 6.40 billion. Sales climbed by almost 50 percent to 109 billion Yuan, also more than expected.
