Daimler will in future buy battery cells from the Chinese manufacturer CATL and wants to ensure standards for labor and human rights with the problematic raw material cobalt. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has been awarded a contract to supply cells, said Sabine Angermann, Purchasing Manager for Raw Materials Daimler, on Wednesday in Stuttgart. A volume did not name her.

The manufacturer CATL, too Volkswagen and BMW has become one of the world’s leading suppliers – with the support of the Chinese government. Because in China, all car manufacturers are obliged to obtain battery cells from domestic companies.

CATL was one of the first suppliers to submit to a Daimler control system to uphold standards such as the elimination of child labor in extracting raw materials, Angermann said. The cobalt used in battery cells worldwide is more than 60 percent from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, While large mining companies were already paying attention to health and safety, in many small mines workers were harvesting ores under bad conditions and even children.

The carmaker from Stuttgart will therefore only use battery cells with cobalt from industrial mining in the Congo, explained the commodities expert. The suppliers would have to guarantee the respect of human rights in their production and there would be unannounced controls. In the longer term, the car maker wants to purchase cobalt from Canada and Australia and is confident that with new battery technology from 2025 can be completely dispensed with the raw material.
