Semi-trailer: Peterbilt wants to build electric trucks

Peterbilt is the next manufacturer to build an all-electric truck to take on the Tesla Semi. Other companies in the industry like Daimler also work on electric trucks.

Tesla seems to have brought the industry with its announced electric trucks properly launched, especially since then received some large orders for the semitrailers before they can even be delivered. The new classic truck manufacturer that wants to build electric semi-trailer trucks is the US company Peterbilt.

The truck manufacturer announced a partnership with Meritor and Transpower, which are to deliver all-electric propulsion systems for two Peterbilt vehicle platforms. These are the Models 579 without a sleeping cabin and Refuse collection vehicles based on the model 520, The 579 is a so-called Class 8 truck, a heavy tractor. However, it should only be used in short-distance operation.

The vehicles would be used for about a year in a test program to check the range, operating hours and charging requirements of vehicles under real-life conditions in addition to conventional diesel vehicles, Peterbilt. The program is partially funded by California environmental protection agencies. Exact technical specifications for the planned trucks have not been published.

Other companies are also testing e-trucks. The US engine manufacturer Cummins Engines already had 2017 developed a semitrailer with electric drive, Of the Cummins aeos is a so-called Class 7 truck. The vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of about 23 tonnes (t) can carry 11 tonnes of freight up to 350 km without recharging the battery, according to the manufacturer. That’s two tons less compared to the diesel variant. The battery capacity is given as 300 kWh. Of the Mercedes Benz E-Actros should even be made available to selected customers in 2018.
