Volkswagen And his Chinese partner Saic closes her joint work in the Chinese city of Nanjing. The work in the East Chinese province ended production, emerged from a statement by the Wolfsburg. The group accelerates the conversion to electrical vehicles, and the production network is optimized for this strategy.
The final closure is to be gradually carried out in the second half of the year and the remaining production is shifted to the neighboring plant Yizheng. It is the first complete closure of a VW plant in China. The planned process and the background of Volkswagen’s problems in China had Manager Magazin reported in April 2024
.
Difficult location in Nanjing
Volkswagen had in mind the work in Nanjing for a long time. Because of its location in the city center and the associated restriction, the production facility was not suitable for an expansion, for example, to convert it for electromobility, as it was said from corporate circles.
In 2008, the joint company Shanghai Volkswagen put the factory into operation in Nanjing. In 2011, according to the company, the plant achieved an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. Finally, the VW Passat and the Skoda Superb were produced there.
VW is also under pressure in China because of the aggressive price war on the e-car market. The Wolfsburg -based company therefore finally tried to score with combustion models. In the People’s Republic, the world’s largest car market, Volkswagen lost 2.3 percent to 1.31 million deliveries at the Group level in the first half of the year. However, the trend is positive there, because in the second quarter the group was able to achieve a slight increase of 2.8 percent.
