Car manufacturers will have to offer “mobility solutions” to their immobilized customers for more than 15 days by dangerous airbags of Takata brand, such as the loan of a replacement vehicle, the Ministry of Transport, Philippe Tabarot, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 on Tuesday.
These vehicles targeted by a “stop drive”, or 1.7 million in total in France, will have to be repaired on average 15 days after making an appointment under penalty of “high on-calls”, said the ministry. Manufacturers must also offer home repair meetings, or tow the dangerous vehicle to the garage, according to a decree which is to be published on Wednesday in the Official Journal, and which AFP was able to consult.
This decree confirms that all the cars concerned equipped with airbags considered at risk in Corsica and overseas must be immobilized, as well as cars dating from before 2011 on metropolitan territory outside Corsica. The ministry has also confirmed the general recall of all cars equipped with a risk of risk throughout France, or 600,000 additional vehicles, but without immobilization. Most manufacturers are concerned from Citroën to Volkswagen via Mercedes, but excluding the Renault group.
If they have not already been contacted by mail, motorists must check on the site of the manufacturer of their vehicle if it is concerned, with its wine number, indicated on the gray card. The manufacturers have twenty days from Wednesday to transmit to the State a first weekly report identifying the actions they will have initiated.
In the event of a breach, manufacturers have a week to set up corrective actions, under penalty of a penalty of one million euros per week late. They are also required to launch “regular” campaigns on radio or by display to inform their customers, but also “door-to-door and street canvassing actions in the departments and overseas regions”, where reminders are skating.
Since 2014, the industrial scandal of these airbags, which have caused a long series of accidents and deaths, has been shaking the automotive sector worldwide. Because of a badly aging gas, this safety equipment, supposed to protect passengers in the event of a shock, can explode, especially in hot and humid climates, by projecting parts of the drivers.
A second fatal accident linked to these airbags took place in mainland France in early June. They caused a total of 18 dead and 25 injured -including 16 deaths and 24 injured in overseas -, according to the Ministry of Transport.
