Schmitz Cargobull AG, a leading European manufacturer of semi-trailers, has acquired a 27.5% equity stake in Sub Zero Insulation Technologies (SZIT), a prominent Indian producer of refrigerated and dry freight truck bodies. The agreement includes an option for Schmitz Cargobull to increase its ownership in the coming years, marking a strategic move to expand its footprint in India’s growing cold chain logistics sector.
The investment aligns with increasing demand for reliable temperature-controlled transport solutions in India, where losses of perishable goods due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure are estimated at 30–40% annually. By partnering with Sub Zero, Schmitz Cargobull aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of cold chain logistics across the country.
Andreas Schmitz, Chief Executive Officer of Schmitz Cargobull AG, stated that the Indian market presents significant growth potential. “Sub Zero has established itself as a key player in the refrigerated transport segment. Through this collaboration, we intend to leverage our engineering expertise and global experience to support the development of advanced transport solutions tailored to local needs,” he said.
Deep Khira, Founder and CEO of Sub Zero, noted that the partnership will drive technological upgrades and operational improvements at the company’s manufacturing facility in Pune. “This collaboration brings international standards in design and production to our operations. We expect advancements in manufacturing processes and the integration of new technologies that will improve product performance and sustainability,” Khira said.
Established in 2015, Sub Zero has grown to become one of India’s leading manufacturers of insulated and refrigerated truck bodies, producing more than 1,500 units per year. The company supplies major commercial vehicle manufacturers, including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Volvo Eicher, Isuzu, and Bharat Benz.
Both companies emphasize shared values, including a family-led business structure, long-term vision, and a commitment to innovation. The Khira family has been involved in vehicle body manufacturing in India since 1949, providing a foundation for Sub Zero’s focus on quality and modern engineering.
As part of the partnership, Sub Zero’s Pune facility will undergo modernization, incorporating advanced production techniques and improved energy efficiency. The upgrades are expected to enhance product durability, thermal performance, and environmental sustainability.
The move supports Schmitz Cargobull’s broader strategy of expanding into emerging markets with localized, sustainable transport solutions. The company views India as a critical market for growth, driven by rising demand for efficient logistics infrastructure and government initiatives to strengthen the cold chain network..
