German Manager Magazine: Audi instead of VW: Lower Saxony buys Bavarian patrol cars004465

In the future, the police in Lower Saxony will increasingly use patrol cars from Bavaria. According to the country’s Interior Ministry, around 208 electric cars of this type are expected to be built by 2026 Audi A6 Avant e-tron will be purchased, which will be produced in Ingolstadt. In the following years, additional new cars will be purchased for the police depending on needs and budget situation.

VW of all people goes away empty -handed. According to an NDR report, the Lower Saxony car manufacturer has apparently not managed to submit a competitive offer. With the ID.7, the Wolfsburgers actually had a suitable electrocompi in the portfolio, which also runs off the assembly line in Emden in Lower Saxony.

This causes frowns. Especially since the state of Lower Saxony is one of the largest shareholders in the VW Group and many of the brand’s plants are currently underutilized. The union IG Metall At least finds it unfortunate that the country purchases police cars from VW’s premium subsidiary Audi instead of directly from the Lower Saxony parent brand.

“From the perspective of the automotive workers, it would certainly have been a strong signal if the state of Lower Saxony had also known itself for domestic automotive production in the federal state,” an IG Metall spokesman told NDR.

The Ministry of the Interior in Lower Saxony, on the other hand, emphasizes that the procurement of police cars is determined by public procurement law. “At the end of a successful process, the most economical offer will be awarded the contract,” explained the ministry. A predetermination of a specific provider or manufacturer is not permitted.

In the specific case, the cheapest offer comes from the special vehicle supplier Haberl Electronic, which has prevailed against two other providers. The state of Lower Saxony has concluded a framework contract of EUR 26.4 million with the company. The unit prices for the electrical Audi A6 models start at 65,700 euros including police-specific special equipment such as flashing lights and radio.

Despite the new award, the police in Lower Saxony generally have no lack of VW factory. “There are currently 19 models of the Volkswagen core brand,” explains the Interior Ministry. How many of the 4,200 cars come from VW in Lower Saxony in Lower Saxony is unknown.
