Volkswagen is making progress in the sale of purely electric cars in Europe. According to information from the German Press Agency, the number of deliveries of fully electric vehicles rose by more than three quarters in the first nine months of the year. The Wolfsburg team want to announce this on Friday.

VW’s market share for electric cars on its home continent was recently 27 percent. In Western Europe, from January to September, every fifth vehicle delivered was a pure electric vehicle. A year earlier it was 12 percent.

Market leader in Europe for electric vehicles

According to reports, e-car orders also continued to rise: in Western Europe the value in the first three quarters was almost two thirds higher than a year earlier. 2024 marked the end of a funding program Germany and other countries have placed a heavy burden on sales of battery-powered vehicles (BEVs). Overall – including combustion engines and mixed drives – customers in the home market also ordered more vehicles from Volkswagen and its subsidiary brands. In the nine months there was an increase of almost a fifth.

Experts expect a subdued picture for the third quarter. Total deliveries are therefore likely to have stagnated at around 2.2 million vehicles. VW in particular has China to contend with strong low-cost competition. In the USA President Donald Trump’s tariff policy is shaking up the market for foreign suppliers.
