STMicroelectronics Launches Eight-Channel Gate Driver for 48V Automotive Systems

STMicroelectronics has introduced the L98GD8, an eight-channel gate driver designed specifically for 48V automotive power systems. The integrated circuit addresses the automotive industry’s shift toward mild-hybrid architectures and enhanced electrical efficiency.

The L98GD8 operates from a 58V supply and features eight fully configurable channels capable of driving MOSFETs in various high-side and low-side configurations. A single driver IC can control MOSFETs configured as individual power switches or as high-side and low-side switches in up to two H-bridges for DC motor applications. The device also supports peak-and-hold control for electrically operated valves.

The 48V powernet architecture enables automakers to expand mild-hybrid system capabilities, including integrated starter-generators and enhanced energy recovery systems. This approach helps manufacturers meet stringent emission testing requirements while powering additional large loads such as e-compressors, pumps, fans, and valves at 48V, which reduces overall vehicle weight and improves electrical efficiency.

Safety and reliability features include per-channel diagnostics for short-circuit to battery, open-load, and short-to-ground faults. The driver incorporates logic built-in self-test capabilities, over- and under-voltage monitoring with hardware self-check, and a configurable communication check watchdog timer.

Additional protection mechanisms include overcurrent sensing with flexible configuration options, drain-source voltage monitoring of external MOSFETs, external shunt resistor voltage monitoring, ultrafast overcurrent shutdown with dual-redundant failsafe pins, battery-undervoltage monitoring, an ADC for battery and die temperature monitoring, and H-bridge current limiting. The programmable gate current feature helps engineers minimize MOSFET switching noise to meet electromagnetic compatibility regulations.

The L98GD8 is currently in production in a 10mm x 10mm TQFP64 package. Budgetary pricing begins at $3.94 for orders of 1,000 pieces. The device is automotive-qualified and designed to meet industry safety and reliability standards.

STMicroelectronics employs 50,000 people and operates as an integrated device manufacturer with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. The company works with over 200,000 customers and thousands of partners globally. ST is targeting carbon neutrality in direct and indirect emissions, product transportation, business travel, and employee commuting, with plans to achieve 100% renewable electricity sourcing by the end of 2027.
