Porsche will build a second SUV model at its Leipzig factory. Porsche announced that the board of directors and supervisory board have now decided to produce the vehicle, known internally as the M1, in the Saxon factory. It should roll off the production line at the end of the decade. The “Leipziger Volkszeitung” had previously reported. Porsche AG shares closed down 1.6 percent on Monday after the plans were announced.
The new model should come onto the market as a combustion engine or plug-in hybrid. In addition to the electric Macan, it will be the second SUV-style vehicle from Leipzig.
“By awarding the contract to the Leipzig location, we are additionally strengthening the competitiveness and flexibility of the location,” explained production director Albrecht Reimold (64). Factory boss Gerd Rupp (57) spoke of a strong signal for Leipzig.
Details about possible investments in the plant and a more precise schedule cannot currently be given, it said. Porsche is currently building the Panamera and Macan models in Leipzig.
