Jaipur transport department has directed all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to complete inquiries into the alleged vehicle number allotment scam and submit reports to the headquarters by Dec 31. The department has also asked RTOs to initiate criminal action where violations are found.
A detailed investigation format highlighting possible anomalies has been circulated to guide the probe. Officials said irregularities could include allotment of old vehicle numbers whose registrations were not renewed, assignment of numbers already linked to existing vehicles, or use of number series not meant for four-wheelers being issued to cars, among other discrepancies.
In Jaipur, authorities have begun physical verification of vehicles and cross-checking registration documents with official records to ensure transparency and compliance. “All RTOs have been asked to start filing FIRs in the vehicle number allotment scam and submit a report to the headquarters by Dec 31. We have asked all transport offices to maintain a record of different kinds of cases and inform the headquarters,” a senior transport official said.
On Nov 25, the transport department had instructed all regional and district offices to lodge FIRs against staff found involved in the scam. The issue first came to light in March, when RTO Jaipur (I) detected irregular backlog transactions being entered into the system.
“As this issue is spread within the department and allied services so deeply, all possible combinations of irregularities are being checked,” the official added.
