Indian Standard Released for Electric Agricultural Tractors

The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced a comprehensive testing standard for electric agricultural tractors, marking a significant milestone in India’s transition toward sustainable farm mechanization.

Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, released IS 19262:2025 ‘Electric Agricultural Tractors — Test Code’ at Bharat Mandapam during National Consumer Day 2025 celebrations.

The standard establishes uniform testing protocols to evaluate the safety, reliability, and performance of electric agricultural tractors. It covers critical parameters including power take-off (PTO) power, drawbar power, belt and pulley performance, vibration measurement, and component inspection.

IS 19262:2025 draws technical guidance from existing standards for conventional tractors and electric vehicles, adapting them specifically for agricultural applications. The standard aims to provide manufacturers with clear guidelines while giving farmers greater confidence in electric tractor capabilities.

Electric agricultural tractors, powered by battery packs and electric motors instead of diesel engines, offer multiple advantages over traditional equipment. These include zero tailpipe emissions, reduced operating costs, lower maintenance requirements, quieter operation, and decreased reliance on fossil fuels.

The standard was developed with input from electric tractor manufacturers, testing agencies, research institutions, and government representatives. Key contributors included the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Central Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institute, and the Automotive Research Association of India.

While implementation remains voluntary, the standard addresses the growing need for consistent evaluation methods as electric tractor adoption increases across India. It supports the country’s objectives of reducing agricultural emissions and promoting clean technology in farming operations.
