San Francisco, Las Vegas, Düsseldorf. Mercedes-Benz is adjusting its strategic priorities for autonomous driving. The car manufacturer is apparently shelving its plans for autonomous assistance systems that enable hands-free driving, which it initially pursued with high speed.

In the revised S-Class luxury sedan, which Mercedes will present at the end of January, driving at so-called level 3, where the person behind the wheel can even watch films, will no longer be available, according to company circles.

Instead, the DAX group initially wants to focus more on automated driving assistants, where the driver must remain attentive at all times. At the CES technology trade fair in Las Vegas, the Swabians presented a system for the US market that can drive off, brake, turn, cross intersections and observe traffic lights within the city.
