German Manager Magazine: E-car bonus 2026: Funding planned retroactively from the beginning of the year004649

Certain car buyers in Germany can count on a new purchase bonus for new electric cars registered this year. It will apply retroactively to electric cars that have been newly registered since the turn of the year, as the “Bild” newspaper reports. Depending on income, marital status and other criteria, grants of between 1,500 and 6,000 euros should be possible.

“The funds are enough for an estimated 800,000 vehicles in the next three to four years,” said Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (49) to the newspaper. The SPD politician said he sees the program as a boost for the domestic industry, which offers powerful electric cars.

Federal Environment Minister Schneider actually wanted to present details of the new edition of the bonus on Friday. But the date was postponed to Monday “in order to be able to carry out final detailed coordination within the federal government,” said the Environment Ministry.

Limit at 80,000 euros annual household income

Last year, the Union and the SPD agreed on new purchasing incentives worth billions, which are intended to particularly benefit households with small and medium incomes. There should be more money for families with children. The set income limit is 80,000 euros of taxable annual household income.

The traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP abruptly stopped an earlier bonus for electric cars at the end of 2023 in order to plug budget holes.

It could still be a few months before car buyers receive the new bonus. A corresponding portal must first be activated, according to “Bild”. Applications could probably be submitted from May.
