The thousandth electric van in the post office

e r is on soft feet therefore, is nimble, manoeuvrable, environmentally friendly and a deliverer of a special kind: The electric transporter of Deutsche Post, briefly called street scooter, is one of the favorite projects of Manager Jürgen Gerdes ,

Gerdes is responsible for letters, e-commerce and parcels in the Post Group. And he has a big goal: the entire fleet of Swiss Post should be converted to e-vans in the medium term. That could be up to 70,000 vehicles once. “We operate one of the largest vehicle fleets in Germany,” says Gerdes. And they would have to become more and more emission-free.

By the beginning of 2017, the Logisti Group intends to decide whether to build the Streetscooter for third parties as well. The demand is great, says Gerdes this Tuesday – while he presented the 1000th Streetscooter in Aachen. “There is no final decision that we sell to third parties. But personally, I would be surprised if we did not. ”

However, an automobile company will not become the post office, as Group CEO Frank Appel recently clarified. But he was convinced of the product, he said a few weeks ago, when the street scooter had been awarded as a pioneer for climate protection with the first prize of “Klima-Expo NRW”.

The production volume is still manageable, but the company wants to turn a bigger wheel soon. After the start of mass production, mass production follows. There, where once rail vehicles of the company Talbot were manufactured, meanwhile Streetscooter run off the line. Post is currently expanding its capacity – from 2017, it plans to build 10,000 electric transporters a year, according to Aachen.

By the end of the year, around 2,000 street scooters will be in use. Customers are expecting the mail in Germany and abroad. Companies, but also municipalities, who want to convert their urban vehicle fleets and reduce the growing carbon dioxide burden in the inner cities, have already shown interest.

Incidentally, the Post had developed the street scooter with the same-named start-up in Aachen. Together with institutes of the RWTH university, the company founders Achim Kampker and Günther Schuh then developed electric vehicles according to the specifications of Swiss Post. Two years ago, the company took over the Streetscooter GmbH completely.

Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks (SPD) praises the e-cars of the post: “Especially the commercial traffic takes place in the cities and will expand in the future.”
