Where am I? Autonomous cars want to know this very well, but with conventional GPS data, this question can not be answered exactly enough. Tesla has submitted an idea for a patent on how to improve positioning. The own cars and their sensors play an important role.

The Patent application entitled “Technologies for vehicle positioning” was submitted in 2017 and is now available.

In it, Tesla describes several solutions in which cameras can detect appropriate positions and other vehicles in the fleet could be used as reference stations for the exchange of GNSS raw data and for position correction.

This could improve positioning accuracy near buildings, bridges, trees or other structures, says Tesla.

More accurate location data would be useful for autonomous driving applications and Tesla intends to use it for its autopilot system. After one Report by Electrek All the inventors listed in the patent applications were part of Tesla’s autopilot team.
