Volkswagen unveils mobile charging station for electric vehicles

Volkswagen unveiled this Thursday, December 27 a preview of its mobile charging station designed for its electric cars. “The latter can be configured flexibly and independently of the power supply whenever it’s needed,” says a statement from the German brand. For example at major events, to meet specific needs.

It has a charging capacity of 360 kWh, and can thus recharge a total of 15 vehicles, at the rate of four at a time. Fast charging allows you to “refuel” a car in 17 minutes. The electric bike can also connect to it. The block can be connected to a 30 kW AC power source for perpetual recharging.

An outlet for used batteries?

Volkswagen adds that the mobile nation can be recharged using renewable energies: “the charging station can be charged with solar or wind energy, which is then passed on to electric vehicles when they are recharged”. The mobile platform consists of a mobile charging column based on a battery pack of the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Platform (MEB). He also proposes to recycle the old car batteries to build this mobile platform. If these batteries are too weak to support a car, they can be reused within a charging station after their revision, says the manufacturer.

The first mobile fast charging stations will be set up during a pilot project in the first half of 2019 in the city of origin of Volkswagen, in Wolfsburg in Germany (Lower Saxony). The start of production is scheduled for 2020.
