German automakers want to extend the exchange premium for old diesel vehicles. Daimler and BMW are now paying the end-of-life bonus until the end of June 2018, according to the industry newspaper Automobilwoche. Originally, the measure pledged at the diesel summit in August should only last until the end of this year.

“We will do our part to keep cities clean and have therefore decided to continue the campaign until 30 June 2018,” a BMW spokeswoman said. The Daimler Group has also decided to extend the deadline. “If you order a car by the middle of next year, you will benefit from the exchange premium,” said a spokeswoman for Automobilwoche.

VW CEO Matthias Müller had already spoken out in favor of a continuation of the exchange premium for end-of-life vehicles. Background of the announced extension is likely to be impending driving bans in many municipalities.

According to estimates of Institute for Automotive Industry (IFA) in Geislingen could threatening driving bans and the special discount, grant the car manufacturer at trade-in of an old diesel when buying a new car, to develop a veritable economic stimulus program for the industry, Because many drivers change from diesel to gasoline, significantly more cars were sold in Germany this year and next year, the IFA predicted recently.

However, the exchange rates are also in the criticism, “Purchase incentives for new diesel, which are only marginally cleaner on the road than older diesel, offer neither a tangible advantage for the environment nor for affected consumers,” had criticized the Federal Association of Consumer Advocates.
