Bollinger B1: First Serious Electric 4WD
Bollinger B1: First Serious Electric 4WD

By Bill Moore

While Rivian has stolen some of the limelight of late, Bollinger is rolling ahead with its production plans to bring zero-emission 4WD motoring to a world urgently in need of carbon-free off-roading.

As a young man fresh out of college, I had no car and no money. So, after picking me up daily for several months, my boss and I converted a World War Two-era Willys Jeep into an off-roading beast powered by a Chevy 283 V-6. That was my commuter car until I could afford to buy my own, a used 1965 Olds 98, if memory serves. So, I have a certain affinity for the off-road genre: especially classics like the Land Rover Defender, which at least to my mind is reflected in Robert Bollinger’s B1.

Rolled out in early 2018, the B1 is the first serious all-electric challenger to the more than half-a-century heritage of gas and diesel-fueled off-roaders that began with my little Willys and subsequently followed by Land Rover, Ford Bronco, Mahindra Scorpio and numerous others.

First conceived in upstate New York, Bollinger Motors relocated to the Detroit area to be able to tap the region’s automotive expertise. In this 30+ minute, one-on-one dialogue with Robert Bollinger, the co-founder and CEO, we discuss the origins and future of the company, which plans to assemble their own vehicles, with limited production slated (hopefully) for Summer 2020.
