Currently, Europe has a problem with battery production and research into new power storage technologies. This could mean that a large part of the automotive value chain will take place in other economic areas in the future. The battery accounts for about one-third of the added value of an electric car.
The European Battery Union should be on the entire value chain focus – from raw materials to cell technology to recycling. The primary objective is a comprehensive competence building in cell production in the European Union.
The Alliance wants to seek funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics. Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) asked One billion euros in state aid in sight,
All gained insights of the European Battery Union are exchanged across borders between the involved partners. The start of joint research activities should be in early 2020.
Also the French government supports the production of battery cells for electric cars in Europe. President Emmanuel Macron wants to have two battery cell factories built in Europe, one in France, the other in Germany. France wants to fund the project with 700 million euros over the next five years.
There are further initiatives for the establishment of battery production in Germany: Recently, a group of German companies quit the street scooter and E.Go initiator Günther Schuh the construction of a battery cell factory,
Indeed The consortium Terra E failed last year with the plan to build such a factory. The big German automakers like Mercedes. VW and BMW In the past few months, long-term battery supply contracts have been concluded with Asian manufacturers. After all: BMW’s Chinese partner Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) wants to build a factory in Erfurt.
