Tesla has already started to gear up for Model Y production at the Fremont facility in California, and the same can be said about the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. The Palo Alto-based automaker is also confident that the similarities between the Model Y and Model 3 will help production to a great extent.

More surprisingly, however, Tesla didn’t decide where to manufacture the electric crossover until the latest quarterly results were published. Investors were told that “due to the large market size for SUVs – as well as higher ASPs – we believe Model Y will be a more profitable product than the Model 3 sedan.”
“Additionally, we are making progress managing Model Y cost with only a minimal cost premium expected over Model 3.” Beyond this choice of words, we know since March 2019 that the bigger brother of the Model 3 will start at $39,000 before savings in the United States of America for the Standard Range.
Level up to the Long Range with rear-wheel drive, and you’re looking at $47,000, 5.5 seconds to 60 mph, and 130 mph in terms of top speed. EPA-rated range is estimated at 300 miles for the rear-wheel drive and 280 for the dual-motor option and Performance. 18-inch wheels come standard, and customers can also opt for a seven-seat layout for an additional $3,000 starting from 2021.
From a design standpoint, the Model Y is more or less a tall hatchback that combines the vehicle architecture of the Model 3 with the profile of the Model X. Because it’s heavier and less aerodynamic than the sedan, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Model Y isn’t as capable in terms of electric range.
Tesla targets a global output of more than 500,000 vehicles “in the 12-month period ending June 30th, 2020” as demand for the Model 3 keeps on growing. The factory in China is crucial to this figure, and in the Middle Kingdom, the Model 3 is priced at 328,000 yuan to steal away customers from premium sedans.
