Berlin: Networking tests by FOKUS

The Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) wants to test autonomous driving in the north of Berlin.

Sensor vehicles in Berlin’s Reinickendorf district are currently capturing a small area in order to obtain HD map material and to explore networking. The project of the Research Institute FOCUS in cooperation with the FU Berlin is traveling with two registration vehicles.

Specifically, the vehicles run between Scharnweber, Antonien, Wald and Ollenhauerstraße. The area was chosen because there are many different types of roads and traffic conditions.

The data that the front car of the FU gathers is forwarded to the following vehicle by FOCUS. It checks how well and how fast the data can be transferred. But the vehicle of the FOKUS also has sensors for mapping the environment.

Furthermore, a transponder is installed on the Siedelmeisterweg, which informs about the traffic light circuit. Traffic light networking will also be integrated into the research field.

also has a Test track in the center and an Autnome e-minibus in Tegel,
