Ford is in talks with dealers with a view to reducing the overall number of dealers in its UK network over the next few years. Motor Trader understands the aim is to have fewer, more profitable dealers in the network over a period of time with a gradual, phased reduction in numbers of its smaller, second tier businesses. Ford declined to comment on the specifics but said in a statement: “Ford has an open door and ongoing dialogue with its dealer partners. “We will meet again with dealers and other franchise investors at the end of February and share any news afterwards.” A reduction in the Ford network would reflect the gradual erosion of its market share and the rise of luxury brand competitors. Back in 2018 Ford finished off the year with a market share of 16.6% in new car sales. Its share was 10.2% in cars last year. Ford retains its market leader status in cars. It is also the market leader in vans with its Transit and Tourneo Custom ranges. The Fiesta was the top selling car in the UK in 2019, a slot it has held for the past 11 years.
