BMW has a new electric car in the works: And the BMW i4 will be built, assures the CEO Harald Krüger

BMW lowered the average CO2 emissions of its new-car fleet in Europe last year from 124 to 122 grams per kilometer, despite a lower diesel share. That announced BMW on Tuesday before the start of the Geneva Motor Show and announced at the same time the construction of a purely electric BMW called i4, which is to offer Tesla Paroli.

A study of this four-door electric coupe had shown BMW in September at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. It should have a range of up to 600 kilometers and a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour. CEO Harald Krüger said on Tuesday: “This vehicle will be a reality: we will build it as BMW i4 in Munich.”

In the luxury-class competitor Mercedes-Benz, the emissions of the climate gas CO2 grew from 123 to 125 grams in the fleet average last year. BMW sold more than 100,000 plug-in hybrids and purely electric cars for the first time last year, and plans to have 25 electrified models on the market by 2025.

Automakers need more electric cars to avoid CO2 fines in the EU and to meet the requirements and demand in China’s largest car market. The EU wants new cars to emit 15 percent less carbon dioxide by 2025, then 30 percent less by 2030. Currently, the rules until 2021. Then all models of a manufacturer may emit on average only 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
