The European Car market shows in September for the first time this year an increase compared to the same month last year. In the EU, 933,987 new cars were registered, the European industry association Acea announced on Friday in Brussels. That was 3.1 percent more than in September 2019.
However, in the previous year the next stage of the new WLTP exhaust gas and consumption test procedure, which came into force at the time, led to pull-forward effects – many cars were still registered in August because they would have required new certification from September.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic and the weeks-long sales stop in spring, after nine months this year there is still a sharp decline in new registrations in the EU of 28.8 percent.
The car markets developed differently in the most important markets in September. In Spain (minus 13.5 percent) and France (minus 3 percent) new registrations fell. In Italy and Germany In contrast, they attracted 9.5 percent and 8.4 percent respectively.
