After longtime Waymo CEO John Krafcik decided to step down from the company, Alphabet’s autonomous-vehicle unit took an unconventional approach in replacing him. Waymo will now have two CEOs: former COO Tekedra Mawakana and former CTO Dmitri Dolgov.
Between 2015 and 2021, Krafcik grew Waymo from an experiment into a fledgling business, overseeing the launch of the first autonomous ride-hailing service in the US and inking partnerships with Fiat Chrysler, Jaguar Land Rover, and Daimler. It will be up to Mawakana and Dolgov to build on that progress and make Waymo a ride-hailing and logistics giant that can generate a return on the billions Alphabet has spent on it.
Mawakana and Dolgov have taken different paths to landing the top job at what experts consider the leading autonomous-vehicle company. Here’s what you need to know about them as they seek to keep Waymo at the forefront of the shift away from human driving.
