Las emisiones medias de CO2 de los coches nuevos en Europa caen un 12% en 2020

According to the data provided by Jato Dynamics, Spain is above the average for the continent.

The new regulations at European level have accelerated the transition towards decarbonisation in the automotive world. The efforts of brands and dealers are beginning to pay off and the emissions averages of cars sold continue to decline. In fact, according to the latest data released by Jato Dynamics, the CO2 emissions of new cars sold in Europe have fallen by around 12% in 2020.

Thus, the average emissions have been 106.7 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) for each kilometer traveled, according to the study. The reduction in polluting emissions is derived from the SUV models, which are the ones who have reduced their emissions the most; and electrification.

Furthermore, the report believes that this decrease in emissions stems from the stricter protocols imposed by the European Union; and the transformation of drivers’ habits, rewarding increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly attitudes.

“Although the industry still needs to do more to meet the CO2 targets of the European Commission, manufacturers have shown significant progress with their range and sales in 2020,” said Felipe Muñoz, global analyst at Jato.

The case of Spain

Despite this reduction, Spain is still above the European average, with 110.5 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled. It is almost four grams more than the rest of the continent. On the other hand, up to six countries on the continent recorded average emissions below 100 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This is the case in the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, France and Finland.

Which combustion produces the most emissions?

Regarding the type of fuel, the diesel model accounted for 28.8% of the total market. It accounts for average emissions of 119.8 grams of CO2. On the other hand, those of gasoline represented 58.8% of the total, with 116.1 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled.

Electrified cars accounted for 10.6% of the total, with an average of 18.9 grams of CO2.
