German Handelsblatt: Autotest: Opel with night vision device – this is how the Grandland should score in the SUV segment002732

New front

The Opel Grandland Hybrid gets the brand-typical Vizor.

Frankfurt The traditional brand with the lightning bolt is sparking again. In the first seven months, Opel registrations in Germany increased by a whopping 35.5 percent, the 100,000-unit mark was only just missed. A good tenth of it bears the word Grandland on the stern, which has sold a good 300,000 times since its appearance four years ago, of which 70,000 remained in the home country. The compact SUV is therefore an important model for the German brand in the new European-American giant Stellantis.
The Grandland, which now has no “X” in its name, will play an even more important role in future when customers are convinced by the newly overhauled SUV. A facelift that has it all. The engine range is already known from the previous SUV. One petrol and one diesel each for the traditionalists, plus two hybrid versions, the battery of which can be charged at the socket.

The waiver of changes in the drive and chassis is understandable, as the Opel shares its technology base with its sister models Peugeot 3008 and Citroen C5 Aircross. The designers take advantage of German freedoms to avoid confusion with the French. The Grandland now greets with the so-called Vizor face of the smaller Mocha. With its slim and black appearance, it should be reminiscent of a dark helmet visor.
Optical modernity instead of monotony, the Grandland wants to be unmistakable in the herd of trendy SUVs. This is also possible thanks to the matrix LED, which uses 168 segments for bright daylight in front of the car. 1,350 euros will be charged extra for this. Only those who order the light show can turn the darkest night into day and invest another 1,000 euros. “Night-Vision” is a night vision device with a thermal imaging camera that recognizes people or animals from a distance and makes them visible on the dashboard. So far, this is only available in expensive premium models from Audi and Co.

Big ambitions

After the smaller Mocha, the new Grandland should also be successful in the growing SUV segment.

New screen

Also new in the Grandland, but also already in use in the Mokka, are the two 22-inch monitors, which are protected by a chrome frame and provide all the information that the electronics have in the program.

Also new in the Grandland, but also already in use in the Mokka, are the two 22-inch monitors, which are protected by a chrome frame and provide all the information that the electronics have in the program. And there are plenty of them, especially in the Grandland with two hearts. As before, the somewhat more modest model also has a 1.6-liter gasoline engine under the hood, which is supported by an 81 kW / 110 PS electric motor. Together, the duo has 165 kW / 224 PS.
So everything as usual. But Opel has succeeded in tweaking the electric range. Ideally, up to 64 kilometers can now be covered, around ten kilometers more than before. “Everything through detailed work such as on the aerodynamics or the software,” says Thomas Overhaus, who is responsible for the Grandland family. The waiver of innovations in the drive ensures identical performance and an unchanged driving experience.
As with many of the two-hearted cars, the acceleration and pulling power are impressive. 360 Newton meters supply the front axle when the two engines work together. With a possible top of 225 km / h, the Opel can even take part in the prestige duel in the left lane. Then, of course, the 13.2 kilowatt-hour battery runs out of juice faster than the driver would like. True to the motto “lawn instead of reach”.

Matrix LED lights

The large SUV also has the manufacturer’s highly praised lights.

Eligible

The plug-in versions create an electric range of up to 64 kilometers.

Environmentally conscious drivers at least manage to get to their desk and back again during the working week with as little emissions as possible. And if necessary, the good piece can then be reanimated overnight for a further 60 kilometers via a household socket.

Good news for the Opel fans among SUV fans: The Grandland Hybrid, which costs around 45,000 euros, is spared the official cross-off list of the funding program. There is a total of around 7,200 euros, a temptation especially for leasing customers. The more than 10,000 euros more expensive and powerful flagship with all-wheel drive and two electric motors (one in front, one in the rear) benefits from almost 6,000 euros in funding.
